Welcome to Rescue Beagle USA.

This blog is dedicated to Lucky, my sweet little girl who passed away in her sleep peacefully on 12-14-12. Lucky was a lemon beagle and came to us as a "rescue" when she was about 3-years old. While she was initially scared, the poor thing was all of 20-lbs (and for her size that was severely under weight) with lots of love and snacks she became the best friend a person could ever have - please give a rescue beagle a second change!

Hound hunting of bobcats and bears outlawed in California

Good news . . . California also outlawed hound-hunting of bobcats and bears after deciding it isn’t a fair fight.

"There is nothing sporting in shooting an exhausted bear clinging to a tree limb or a cornered bobcat," state Sen. Ted Lieu said when the bill he authored was passed.

Mackeral for Winter Skin Problems

I saw this posted on Face Book and wanted to share it here.

Goya Jack Mackerel in Brine

Winter weather wreaking havoc on your pup's skin & coat? Add a tablespoon of smashed up canned mackerel w/ it's brine (juice) per 1/2 cup of kibble, mix w/ warm water to make a gravy & serve. Very inexpensive, super heart healthy & the beagles LOVE it! Our guys have the softest fur. A $2 can lasts several meals! Canned Mackerel can be found with canned tuna.

The Blessing You Receive When Adopting a Rescue Beagle

Britt Needs a Foster Home

I'm re-posting the below from Face Book! Britt looks so much like Lucky when we first got her . . . and Lucky was a wonderful dog. Please help Britt! Contact Judy directly if you can. Thank you and God Bless!
There are those - you know the people we mean - who think that dogs should be chained outside, don't feel cold, fear, loneliness... Those are the people who have never looked upon shelter photos of an abandoned animal.
Meet Britt. She came to the shelter as a stray. She's about 2 years old. She is very worried about her fate in the shelter. Can you tell?
If you are willing to foster her, we can pull her and give her a new lease in life. She is just aching for kindness. Contact judy@beaglemaryland.org.
And please SHARE her! The more people who see her, the more likely she is to walk out of the shelter.

Please Consider Adopting a Beagle or Fostering One!

Most rescue beagles were either lab subjects or abandoned by a heartless hunter when the dog was no further use to him. Sometimes the hunter even just drops them off in a field! (Like I said heartless!)

Please consider adopting or fostering a beagle . . . they make excellent family pets and usually play well with other pets (cats and dogs).

Here's a video about lab beagles now free!

These beagles have known nothing except the confines of metal cages. They have known no soft human touch, no warm bed, no companionship, no love. Finally, after years of being poked and prodded, these beagles are FREE!

Click here to watch the video.

Thank you . . . when you love and care for an animal, you receive many blessing for this act of kindness.

Please Microchip Your Beagle

I love beagles, we all do . . . as wonderful as they are, they really lack the ability to find their way home should they go off-lease. That's why beagle experts suggest that you do not take your beagle pet off leash. But things happen, they jump the fence, they dig under the fence, their collar breaks, the leash breaks, etc, etc . . . so be smart and have your veterinarian microchip your beagle (any dog or cat). It's easy and painless for the dog and it may just save his/her life. When you microchip your pet, you increase the odds of them being returned should they ever get lost.

Lost Beagle from Brookline, MA

Missing Dog (Beagle) Brookline, MA

Pkease help Dennis Lehane find his beagle.

"Our recent and beloved rescue dog, Tessa, jumped the fence in Brookline [Mass.] and has been roaming through the wilds of Coolidge Corner for the last 24 hours," he wrote Tuesday on Facebook. "It's possible she's staying in some good Samaritan's home right now or has tucked herself away on a porch. But if anyone sees her or knows of her whereabouts, please reach out to this page. ... She's smart, fast, and immeasurably sweet. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body. She's micro-chipped, but her tags were off when she was let out into the yard."

Rolling Dog Farm

God Bless Steve Smith and Alayne Marker!

Please support them as they rescue disabled animals and give them a good home! Talk about giving a disabled animal a second chance!

Meet Louie, a blind beagle and part of their family.

Here's more about their wonderful story (it's from their Web site).

We founded this nonprofit originally as the Rolling Dog Ranch Animal Sanctuary in December 2000, when we left our corporate jobs in Seattle and moved to a 160-acre ranch in the Blackfoot River Valley of western Montana. Our dream was to create a special place for animals with disabilities. These are the animals who are often the least likely to be adopted and among the most likely to be euthanized in traditional shelters.

From the outset, we had named the ranch the "Rolling Dog" because our dogs loved to roll around on their backs in the sagebrush- and grass-covered meadows there.

After ten wonderful years in Montana, we moved our operations during the spring and summer of 2010 to an equally beautiful old farm in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire. You can read about why we relocated on our blog here.  Once we got settled, we changed the name to Rolling Dog Farm – it seemed a much better fit for New England, and everyone here calls us a farm anyway!

Even though our location and name changed, one thing stayed the same:  The dogs — and the horses! — still love to roll around on their backs in the lush and green New Hampshire grass!

Our disabled residents are remarkable animals. They are happy, energetic and loving. Many of our visitors can't believe the animals they see romping with each other and running around are blind or cope with some other kind of handicap. There isn't a single animal here who feels sorry for himself or herself. Each and every one of them loves being alive.

That's really the ultimate inspiration for us. Despite their disabilities, they want nothing more than a chance to enjoy life. And that's what they get to do here.

Shame on Fayette SPCA!!!!!

http://www.wpxi.com/news/news/local/buddy-dog-owners-be-cited-animals-death/nP226/

CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. —

Following substantial social media chatter and an online campaign seeking "justice," Channel 11 News has learned that the owners of a dog in Connellsville will be cited.

The beagle, now known as "Buddy," died earlier this month in Bullskin Township.

After receiving hundreds of emails and Facebook posts in regard to the animal's death, Channel 11 investigated and found out that the dog was from Fayette County.

“The neighbor that ended up eventually taking it to the vet clinic to have it looked at had been calling the SPCA here locally and several other organizations over the course of the last year to report the conditions of the dog. Apparently he received no help from anyone,” Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Stefani Plume said.

Since first learning about the dog's death, Channel 11 has kept in contact with state police and found out Tuesday that they plan on filing two citations against the owner: one for animal cruelty and one for not properly licensing the pet.

The two people who live in the house, Kelly Lazar and Mike Butler, will have to go before a magistrate and explain what happened to the dog.

State police said they interviewed the Fayette SPCA and asked why they didn’t check on the dog after repeated calls by neighbors.

“Their answer was that the dog wasn’t licensed, therefor they didn’t go out to the house to check on the animal,” Plume said.

Fayette SPCA claims that no one ever called to complain about the dog's condition. They said they first learned of the dog when Channel 11 News contacted them after the dog had died.

Lazar and Butler have not commented on the issue.

Beagle Battles Bedbug Problem

Three cheers for Ms. Liberty Bell, a 2 1/2 year old beagle who came to the bedbug rescue for Wichita’s Central Library.

The library was closed after a patron found a bedbug on a library chair. Upon further inspection other bedbugs were found and this is when it was decided to bring in Ms. Bell.

She spent three hours hunting for bedbugs at a cost of $250.00 per hour. Ms. Bell resides in Norman, OK and works for a K9 Special Forces.

Because of her find, the library is now heat-treating all upholstered public seating chairs to solve their bedbug problem.

Anal glands update

It's been sometime since I wrote about Lucky and her anal glands. I decided to go to another veterinarian and her suggested was to get Lucky annal glands expressed every two-weeks and see how she does. Well I decided to give this a go and for the first several months I did as requested: I took Lucky in to have her annal glands expressed. After about 3.5 months, the veterinarian suggested we change the visits to every three-weeks. We did this for another several months and I now take Lucky in every month. I'm thrilled. And so is Lucky. I still feed her pumpkin (I found that when I took her off pumpkin her stools got runny.) and she seams to like how it tastes . . . win win for all! I buy the large can of Shop-Rite pumpkin for $1.99 and it lasts over a week. I add two to three tablespoons to each meal. It does not matter what brand you buy, just make sure it's 100% pumpkin and does not have additional stuff like nutmeg or other spices.

Can you help Angel?

I saw this post on www.Indiegogo.com and want to post it to my blog in the hopes to bring awareness to Angel's situation. This cute beagle is from Chicago and her owner really needs our financial help.

Angel's owner, Linzle is struggling to pay for the huge vet bill she incurred for Angel. If you can help with a donation, that would be wonderful.

The good news is that Angel received excellent medical care and is back to her old self!

Molly the Beagle

Here's an article about Molly who is in need of adoption. Donations for her medical condition also are welcome. To read the entire article, click here.

If you are interested in donating toward Molly’s bladder surgery, fostering her during her recuperation, or adopting her, visit www.MedfieldShelter.com, email info@medfieldshelter.com or call 508-359-8989.

Molly was the Medfield Animal Shelter’s “pet of the week” last week but is back again after her pre-arranged surrender did not go as smoothly as planned.

Molly arrived at the Medfield Animal Shelter last week as a pre-arranged surrender.  Her family had one young child and then a premature baby and they felt Molly was not getting enough attention.

Kim Agricola of the Medfield Animal Shelter describes Molly as a “plucky little beagle” who is “easygoing and sweet, loves her car rides…and is thrilled to go for her short walks when she isn’t taking long naps on her fleece next to the [shelter's] manager's chair.”

Molly's surrender did not go as smoothly as planned.

It was discovered that Molly had severe ear infections in both ears all the way down to her inner ears, and was partially deaf due to the long-term effects.  She was also partially blind which was why she was walking into walls and could not walk in a straight line.

Blood work revealed a massive infection from multiple sources.  The vet started her on four medications and fluids, and she was tended to by shelter volunteers on her first night away from her previous owners.

“Fortunately, she started improving right away and let us know what a little trooper she is,” said Agricola, adding that – at Molly’s one-week checkup – her sight is almost completely restored and she can walk in a straight line, but she remains partially deaf.

“Her spirits are much brighter and she greeted her vet with wags and a woof when presented with a cookie to eat,” said Agricola.

Part of the recheck visit was an x-ray which revealed that Molly has been dealing with pneumonia and has had bladder stones for at least two years that were not treated.  She now needs surgery to remove them.

Agricola said the animal shelter – which has limited funds and volunteers – is not the ideal place for Molly.

“Being the kind of shelter we are, we don’ back away from an animal in need once it is in our care,” she said.  “We are trying to find a way to help Molly get all the care she needs to get well and then find her next home.”

The Beagle Effect: How Saving Puppies Enriched These LGBT People

"Some dogs grow to adulthood without ever having felt the sun on their faces or the grass on their paws. And a great many of these dogs are beagles.

According to the Beagle Freedom Project’s website, “Beagles are the most popular breed for lab use because of their friendly, docile, trusting, forgiving, people-pleasing personalities. The research industry says they adapt well to living in a cage, and are inexpensive to feed. Research beagles are usually obtained directly from commercial breeders who specifically breed dogs to sell to scientific institutions.”

The Beagle Freedom Project is doing all it can to change that by working to educate the public about the practice. They’re also rescuing beagles that have spent their lives being tested in laboratories and placing them in loving homes.

According to Jean Geddes, the Beagle Freedom Project’s Outreach and Adoptions Coordinator, not only are the majority of their adopters LGBT, but many of their volunteers, donators, and supporters are as well.

Here are a just a few of these amazing pets and the parents who saved them."

Rescued beagles now federal agents

Here's a great story about a pair of young beagles, Jasper and Finn, two new federal agents who sniff out contraband at international airports. Before being federal agents they were rescued from area animal shelters by the Columbia County Humane Society. After going through intensive training at the National Detector Dog Training Center in Newnan, Gerogia, they now work for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

"Beagles are small, friendly and non-threatening. But they also are eager to please and have very sensitive noses that can differentiate 50 different scents."

What a Guy!

This article is about Jeff Bennett. He has flown dogs, cats, rabbits, pythons and more to safety in his small plane. Residing in Key West, several years ago Jeff decided to do something about animal cruelty.

"Bennett really gets riled over stories of animal cruelty, neglect and abandonment — and, about three and a half years ago, he decided to do something about it. He started using his small plane to fly dogs, cats and a host of other critters in dire circumstances to safe places where they’d receive treatment and care. On Friday, Bennett is hitting a milestone by flying his 1,000th rescue animal to safety."

"Bennett is affiliated with Pilots N Paws, a South Carolina-based organization that whisks “death-row” dogs, cats and other animals to safety by connecting shelters and animal rescue organizations with pilots and plane owners. Since Pilots N Paws was founded in 2008, more than 2,700 pilots have spent their own time and money transporting thousands of animals all over the United States."

Thanks Jeff! And thanks Pilots N Paws!

Genetically Modified Beagle Glows

Jennifer Viegas wrote this article and it was published online on Mon Aug 1, 2011. The Gist of her article is three fold - and I quote:

  • Scientists have created a genetically modified female beagle that glows fluorescent green when under ultraviolet light.
  • The process to create the beagle, "Tegon," allows the glow to be turned on and off by command.
  • Researchers hope such animals will help scientists track the course of disease via fluorescence.
Several of the comments about the article include:

Tara Stewart
Poor Beagles. This makes me sad. Everyone should read The China Study and find out "how such diseases develop" it's already been figured out. Leave the Beagles OUT OF IT.

 Greta Gabriel
As the owner of three rescued Beagles, I find this deplorable.  What comes next?  Of course now that they glow they will be given diseases to watch their courses.  My Beagles are intelligent, and sensitive animals who earn their own way.  One is my service dog, and all three are therapy dogs at the VA.

Time to stop this barbarism.

Girl Scouts donate fleece toys to 'needy' beagles

Here's a wonderful story about Girl Scouts helping hounds. A BIG THANK YOU to all the girls that helped. Below are highlights:

"The Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona got together for a 'day of service' and opted to make these fleece animals for the various animal rescue organizations across Southern Arizona.  They heard about the Southern Arizona Beagle Rescue (SoAZBR) from a program called - Helping Homeless Hounds.

There were over 200 Girl Scouts who got together (from ages 5 - 17) to do various projects for this day of service and among the activities were the 40 fleece toys.  It was through the Scouts love of animals that they were able to give back to these deserving hounds."

Alliance for Animals

Here's another note-worthy group: Alliance for Animals. Below is their mission statement:

AFA is a non-profit 501(c)3 animal rights organization whose fundamental belief is that all animals, human and nonhuman, should not be treated as the property of another. AFA was created to promote ethical, compassionate treatment of all animals through a variety of means including:
  • Educating and increasing the awareness of the public on matters relating to the ethical treatment of animals and the philosophy of animal rights
  • Promoting veganism, which is a moral and political commitment rather than simply a diet choice
  • Bringing to public attention situations of animal abuse and exploitation
  • Encouraging and supporting the efforts of pro-animal individuals and groups throughout the state
AFA makes every attempt to provide accurate information, to be approachable to the general public, to advocate for non-violence and respect, to serve as role models with respect to our views on antivivisection and veganism. AFA employs one part-time paid employee and strives to run the organization as financially responsible and efficiently as possible with the use of its volunteers, members, and donors. AFA is environmentally conscious and believes in acting locally to make change globally.

On their Web site, listed was a facility that  breeds and raises beagle puppies by the thousands to be sent to research facilities -- Ridglan Farms, LLC of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin. To learn more, click here.

New Jersey Leads the Way with "Pet Buckle Up Laws"

If you live or plan on visiting New Jersey, please be aware of laws the prevent driving with pets loose in the car.

Drivers who do not secure their pet can face a ticket of $250 to $1,000 and up to six months in jail. Additionally, allowing your pets to hang his head out the window, having him riding in the back of a truck or curling up on the driver’s lap are also ticket-able offenses under the law.

Here's another article I found on beagle mills.

Row As Firm Moves To Breed Beagles For Tests

Controversial plans to breed more beagles for use in scientific research are being considered by the Government.

The proposals by East Yorkshire company B&K Universal are being looked at by Communities Secretary Eric Pickles.

Anti-vivisection groups claim the plans would lead to more dogs being used in laboratory experiments, but the company insists it wants to reduce the number of animals being imported.

Sky News was given exclusive access to the firm's beagles bred for use in animal testing - the first time in its 37-year history that cameras have been allowed on the site.

The dogs are housed in a compound on the edge of the remote village of Grimston, east of Hull, and are shielded from animal rights extremists by razor wire, CCTV cameras and guards.

Coconut oil for dog anal gland problems

Canned Pumpkin for dog anal gland problems

The two health issues Lucky struggles with are her anal glands and itching.

The treatment the vet has Lucky on for her anal glands is not as effective as when the treatment was first started, so I went on-lint to research other possible natural solutions.

I came across canned pumpkin . . . I happened to have a can of pumpkin in my pantry (from the holidays) and gave her 1/2 cup in her raw food this morning . . . but remember the canned pumpkin MUST be 100% pumpkin and not pumpkin mix to make a pumpkin pie with . . .I'll keep you posted with her progress. I'm also going to add coconut oil to her food as well (My next post is about coconut oil).

I found this information on a Web site called: Earth Clinic, click here to visit the thread

While researching on-line, I also came across another product I'm thinking of trying:  PetAlive AnalGlandzThis product contains a blend of natural, cleansing ingredients in an herbal tincture and will effectively cleanse the anal area, reduce pain and swelling and assist in softening of hardened material to be expressed from the glands. When applied, the product helps express your dog's anal glands and also treats infected anal glands in dogs naturally.

I'm always looking for solutions of treating Lucky's anal glands, so if you have a solution, please share!

Food: Raw Meat Diet for Dogs

I’m a huge supporter of a raw meat diet. I feed Lucky Bravo and she loves it. Since changing her diet to raw about three years ago, she has had less ear and eye infections and her overall health has improved. I attribute her wellness to her new diet. Before raw I was feeding Lucky a high-quality kibble, then my sister convinced me to switch to raw (My sister had been feeding her three-dogs raw for over a decade with outstanding results).

And I’m so happy that I did. For Lucky’s age, she’s almost 12-years old; she has lots of energy and few health issues. While it costs me a bit more than kibble, I pay less in vet bills . . .plus Lucky enjoys good health (and that's most important).

There are many different raw diets available. I use Bravo because of the ingredients they use – simple three different vegetables and meat (I give Lucky either their chicken, turkey, or beef blend). Lucky has sensitivities to eggs and I found other raw diets that had eggs in them.

Since Lucky loves vegetables, I usually add additional vegetables, for example cooked cauliflower, spaghetti squash, string beans, and lettuce.

If you are currently feeding your dog a raw diet, please share!

Hide the Cookie - a fun game to play with your dog

Lucky loves playing "Hide the Cookie."

We all know that beagles are food-motivated, so playing this game really keeps Lucky on her toes.

As the name implies, I "hide" small treats for Lucky to find. I contain the game to one room and a room that has few breakable items. Some of the treats that are hidden are hard to find and it requires Lucky to sniff and sniff and sniff . . .

I try to play this sort of game with Lucky at least once a week . . . depending upon where the snacks are hidden, it might take Lucky 10 to 15 minutes to find and devour all the treats.

Do you have a favorite game you play with your beagle. if so, please share it . . .
